Lizards

Green Anole

I was thrilled when Green Anoles started appearing in SunCurve. They like to climb the bird statues, perhaps for the view or the warmth. It may help keep them out of the reach of the neighborhood cats.

Five-line Skink

Five-line Skinks are the lizard we see most frequently. They enjoy the water feature and the rocks around it.

Broad-headed Skink

Less frequently, a Broad-headed Skink comes into view.

Turtles

Eastern Box Turtle

I was thrilled to spot an Eastern Box Turtle getting a sip from the pond on September 13, 2026. That’s only the second Box Turtle I’ve seen here since 1988. About 25 years ago, a huge Snapping Turtle appeared on our front walk for an hour or so on his way to somewhere else.

Snakes

North American Ratsnake

We rarely see snakes here. So far, they have all been helpful rather than dangerous. Once or twice a year, a Ratsnake slithers by and away. I’ve seen a few Common Garter Snakes and two Eastern Wormsnakes but did not get good photos of those. Snakes keep the mice and voles in check, so they are good for the garden and the house.
