We made the dragon crevice garden from left-over stone from the patio project. I designed it and stone mason Brooks Burlson put it into place. Adam Page put in the high-drainage mix of popped rock and compost.
You can’t see the dragon until you walk around Pond Hill or through the Camellia Path. The head and main body are partly submerged on Pond Hill. Then the dragon goes under the path to pop up twice again under the Double-File Viburnum.

Plants in the Dragon Crevice Garden
In Fall 2025, I planted the dragon with these native, drought-toleration plants:
- Coral Bells (Heuchera americana)
- Maple-leafted Alumroot (Heuchera villosa)
- Foam Flower (Tiarella wherryi)
- Star Rock Phlox (Phlox subulata ‘Emerald Blue’)
- Blue Wood Sedge (Carex flaccosperma)
- Broad-leafed Sedge (Carex platyphylla)
- Green and Gold (Chysogonum virginianum)

The first three did particularly well, even through the drought of 2026. Their spiky flowers added fierceness to the dragon. The Phlox also thrived. The last three perished. I’ll try replanting the Green and Gold around the dragon rather than in it in Fall 2026.
